PRONOUNS

Pronouns are words that we can use to replace nouns. Because pronouns have no meaning of their own, we are able to communicate without them. For example, read the following story about a young advertising professional named Paulo. This story is written without any pronouns.

Paulo is a young advertising professional from São Paulo. Paulo has bought a vacation house in the countryside. Mrs. Souza sold this house to Paulo. But now Mrs. Souza wishes the house still belonged to Mrs. Souza. Mrs. Souza is upset with Mrs. Souza for selling Mrs. Souza’s house to Paulo.

As you can see, when we eliminate pronouns, language gets repetitive!

Now, let’s look at the same story again – this time with pronouns.

Paulo is a young advertising professional from São Paulo. HE has bought a vacation house in the countryside. Mrs. Souza sold IT to HIM. But now SHE wishes IT still belonged to HER. SHE is upset with HERSELF for selling IT to HIM.

Pronouns can be divided into several groups. There are personal pronouns, reflexive pronouns, intensive pronouns, indefinite pronouns, interrogative pronouns, demonstrative pronouns, relative pronouns, and reciprocal pronouns. There are also possessive adjectives, which we use in a way similar to the way we use pronouns.

To better understand which pronouns are part of each group, take a look at the illustration that accompanies this article.

How many of these pronouns do you use when you speak English?
