PUT A CORK IN IT

The English expression “put a cork in it” (tampar com rolha) is a colloquial way of saying “shut up.” But there is one situation in which putting a cork in your mouth can actually help you speak more clearly – by improving your articulation.

Why is articulation important?

Have you ever noticed that some people are easier to understand when they speak English than others? For instance, have you ever paid attention to how TV host Ryan Seacrest speaks when he presents the program American Idol? He has great articulation and you can hear ev-ery syl–la-ble of ev-ery word. People normally don’t speak this way in real life, but TV and radio personalities depend on clear articulation – speaking slowly and deliberately – to get their messages across.

So here is an exercise that can help you improve your articulation, and all you need is a cork.

Put the cork between your front teeth as if it were a cigar. (If you don’t have a cork you can use your thumb.)

Now start reading this text out loud until your arrive at the end of this paragraph. Read slowly and pronounce ev-ery syl-la-ble. When you’re done, remove the cork from your mouth and read this paragraph again. Do the words sound clearer and easier to understand?

Give the cork technique a try. And remember that clear articulation is one of the secrets of clear communication.
